training session.Dr Pagelio and OLPC trainee teachers.The teacher training at St Peter Chanel Primary School in Erima, Port Moresby began on Monday 20th April 2009 with a visit from the Secretary for Education, Dr Joseph Pagelio. Dr Pagelio made an introductory speech to the participating teachers emphasizing the importance of the OLPC project and how the project can help in the delivery of the outcome-based curriculum. The outcome-based curriculum has been introduced and implemented in the country for sometime. After Dr Pagelio’s remarks, Dr Alfred Tivinarlik began the training with an introduction of the whole concept of the OLPC project stressing the core principles of OLPC. The teacher training went on for four days with the first ever XS server connectivity to the internet. The connection was established on Thursday 23rd of April 2009 with the official launching of a partnership for OLPC Papua New Guinea between the National Department of Education, Telikom PNG Ltd (a local carrier) and Divine Word University. The training program consisted of an intensive training on the XO computer and the integration of curriculum content. This was followed by a practicum component where participants were assessed on their competency in using the computers and integrating it to curriculum.

Telikom Provides Internet Connectivity for XS School server at St Peter Chanel Primary School PDF Print E-mail

Telikom Engineers working on the ADSL broadband internet connection for the XS schoolserver at St Peter Chanel Primary School, Port Moresby.Telikom PNG engineers configuring ADSL modem.The teacher training for OLPC PNG went to another level when Telikom PNG Ltd provided the connectivity to the internet. This was the first ever server and internet connectivity for OLPC project in Papua New Guinea. After site inspection Telikom PNG Ltd decided that ADSL broadband internet connection was the best option given the location. The internet speed for the connectivity is 512kbps. The participants for the training had the chance to access the internet through the school server on Friday 24th April 2009 at the official launching of the partnership between National Department of Education, Telikom PNG Ltd and OLPC Papua New Guinea. With the internet and server connection, the Secretary for National Department of Education told the teachers that they have to make use of the unlimited teaching resources that they have at their disposal.

Mr Benedict going through the training moduleOn the 9th of March Mr. Tony Benedict from Solar Energy Systems, a firm which specializes in renewable energy conducted an in-house training for fourteen OLPC PNG staff at Divine Word University. The two hour training included going through the basics of how renewable (solar and wind) energy works and how it can be harnessed to power electrical appliances, especially the XOs. Before going through the basics of the renewable energy sources, Mr. Benedict introduced different types of renewable energy sources that were available in Papua New Guinea and the equipment for the different renewable energy sources. He introduced two types of renewable energy sources a hybrid system of solar and wind that were available and applicable to Papua New Guinea especially the remote areas. Both can be used separately or together.
